Mary Louise Grilliot, 77, a longtime resident of Troy, passed away Sunday evening, May 3, 2026, at Englewood Health & Rehab. She was reunited with her husband of 54 years and welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven after a prolonged illness. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she lived her life to be an example of Christian values, and made a profound impact on all those who knew her.
She was born on July 12, 1948, in West Chester, PA, to the late Albert and Letta (Beaudry) Tromans. The third of four children, her own Christian upbringing shaped how she would raise her children. In 1956, her family moved to southwest Ohio. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in Hamilton in 1966, and entered the convent after high school. She had to leave the convent due to illness, and later when attending the University of Dayton in 1969, she met Leo, the man who would later become her husband, at the Catholic Young People’s Club (CYPC).
On July 3, 1971, Mary began her own chapter when she married her soulmate, Leo L. Grilliot, whom she had 54 wonderful years before his passing on November 8, 2025. Mary and Leo had three children, Ben (Beth), Tony (Nikki) and Patrick (Aaron Wingo); and raised them to be examples of Christ. After raising her three children, Mary was blessed with five grandchildren, Jason, Kiara, Taryn, Jocelyn & Corey, all of whom she loved and spoiled. She is also survived by her siblings, Fred, John (Bonnie), and Anne (Terry) Ungerbuehler; many nieces and nephews; and several great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo; nephews Alan, Dustin, and William; and her sister-in-law Marilyn Tromans, who passed away two days before Mary. She will also be joined in heaven by her close friends, Joan McVay and Lois Wimmers.
Mary was a teacher, devoting nearly 40 years of her life to Catholic education as a reading, religion, and, for most of her career, a second grade teacher. She loved her students, and felt that having a positive impact on them was the best paycheck she could receive. When her health forced her to retire in 2011, Mary did not let that stop her, and remained active in her parish community at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Troy. She continued to assist with Faith Formation, ministering to the sick with her husband Leo, and making baked goods for funeral luncheons. She is loved and will be missed by many, but will always be remembered for her sense of humor, the love she had for her family, and her strong commitment to her faith. The family would like to thank Englewood Health & Rehab for the excellent care Mary received.
