Ronald Lee Horner Schultz, 79, of Covington, passed away Friday evening, November 14, 2025, at his residence. He was born September 1, 1946, in Piqua, to the late Richard Lee Horner and Marjorie M. (Fields) Horner Schultz. Richard was killed in a train accident in January 1947. When his mother married the late Leon W.R. Schultz in 1950, Ron was adopted by his father. On August 17, 1968, Ron married Judith A. (Oliver) Schultz; she survives.
He will also be missed and remembered by his son, Theodore “Ted” Schultz of Columbus, Ind.; his daughter, Dr. Angela (Chris) Isbel of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Lauren, Victoria and Madelyn; his siblings, Tim (Peg) Schultz of Versailles, Mike (Doris) Schultz of St. Henry and Christina Hammaker of Versailles; siblings-in-law, Terry (Sandy) Oliver, Belinda Richmond, Joe (Barb) Oliver, Tim (Lois) Oliver; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Randy Hammaker and Bill Oliver.
Mr. Schultz was a 1964 graduate of Versailles High School, attended Miami University, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from the Defiance College, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He came to Covington in 1969 to begin a 30-year career as a social studies teacher, where he also was the longtime Student Council advisor, boys’ basketball scorekeeper, and football chain gang. His coaching career spanned 51 years, primarily coaching boys and girls golf, boys and girls track, football and basketball. Ron was a member of the Covington Athletics Hall of Fame as an individual, and as a coach of two different teams.
Ron was a longtime member of the Covington Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session for 50 years. He was also a longtime member of the former Covington Noon Optimist Club, now the Covington Tomorrow service club, and the Covington Bucc Boosters. He enjoyed playing golf, and cheering on the Covington Buccs, Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds.
Memorial services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, at Covington Presbyterian Church, 30 N. Pearl St., Covington, with Pastor Greg Kurtz and Rev. Frank Gready officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m-12 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Private burial will be at a later date in Brock Cemetery, Brock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Covington Presbyterian Church. Online condolences may be left for the Schultz family at moorefh.com.
